Apostil

Apostille

Pronounced: ah-pos-TEEL

A certificate added to a public document in its own country so that it is accepted as genuine in Türkiye, without consular legalisation.

What it means for you

Foreign documents — judgments, powers of attorney, birth and marriage certificates, company records — generally need an apostille before a Turkish authority will accept them, plus a sworn translation once here. Both steps take time and are a common reason files stall.

Commonly confused with

An apostille certifies the origin of a document, not its content. It says the signature and seal are authentic; it does not say the document is legally sufficient for what you want to do.

Where you meet this word

Obtained from the designated authority in the country that issued the document — before you send anything to Türkiye.

Statute: 1961 Hague Apostille Convention
