Recognition of a foreign judgment in Türkiye

Pronounced: tah-nuh-MAH

The court decision that makes a foreign judgment legally effective in Türkiye as proof — without, by itself, making it enforceable.

What it means for you

Recognition is what you need when the point is status rather than money: proving that a divorce granted abroad is valid here, or that a foreign court has already settled a question. It does not let you seize anything; for that you need tenfiz.

Commonly confused with

The practical difference is what you want to do next. If you want your Turkish records to reflect a foreign judgment, recognition is usually enough. If you want to collect against assets in Türkiye, recognition alone will not do it.

Where you meet this word

In family matters above all — a foreign divorce that has not been recognised can leave you still registered as married in Türkiye.

Statute: Turkish Private International Law (MÖHUK) No. 5718
