İpotek

Mortgage over real estate

Pronounced: ee-poh-TEK

A security right registered on a property so that a debt can be recovered from it if it is not paid.

What it means for you

A mortgage follows the property, not the person. If you buy real estate with a mortgage still registered on it, the security stays in place — which is why clearing or accounting for it is part of a safe purchase.

Commonly confused with

It is not a bank product only. A mortgage can secure any debt, including one owed to a private party.
