Haciz

Attachment / seizure of assets

Pronounced: hah-JEEZ

The step in an enforcement proceeding where the debtor's assets are legally attached so they can be sold to pay the debt.

What it means for you

Attachment is what turns a paper claim into money. It can reach bank accounts, receivables, vehicles, real estate and movable property. Certain assets and a portion of wages are protected by law.

Commonly confused with

Haciz happens after a proceeding is under way. İhtiyati haciz is the precautionary version, obtained earlier to stop assets from disappearing before you get that far.

Where you meet this word

In enforcement files, and in the sentence every creditor wants to hear: "hacze gidildi" — the attachment has been carried out.
