Asliye hukuk mahkemesi

Civil court of first instance

Pronounced: as-lee-YEH hoo-KOOK mah-keh-meh-SEE

The general civil court that hears most disputes not assigned to a specialised court.

What it means for you

It is the default forum: if no special court has jurisdiction, this is where a civil case starts. Commercial disputes go to the commercial courts, family matters to the family courts, labour claims to the labour courts.

Commonly confused with

Sulh hukuk mahkemesi is a different, lower civil court with its own defined list of matters. Which court hears your case is set by law, not by choice.
