Restrictions are recorded as codes, and different codes have very different causes and consequences — overstaying, a deportation decision, a public-order ground, unpaid fines. You often discover one only when a visa or residence application is refused, or at the border.
Commonly confused with
A restriction is not the same as a deportation decision, and neither is the same as administrative detention. They can appear together, but they are separate acts with separate remedies and deadlines.

In a refusal notice, at passport control, or when a residence application is rejected without an obvious reason.
