İkamet izni

Residence permit

Pronounced: ee-kah-MET iz-NEE

The permit that allows a foreign national to stay in Türkiye beyond the period allowed by a visa or visa exemption.

What it means for you

Residence permits come in types — short-term, family, student, long-term — each with its own conditions, duration and renewal rules. The type you hold affects far more than the right to stay: it affects work, healthcare, and what happens if your circumstances change.

Commonly confused with

A residence permit is not a work permit. Holding one does not by itself entitle you to work, and a work permit can carry the right of residence with it.

Where you meet this word

On the card itself, in every renewal, and in the refusal decisions that have short appeal deadlines.
